Bring out the inner adventurer in you, with a trip to The Big Outdoor Show, Milton Keynes this Spring Bank Holiday weekend (May 23-25). You can try loads of different outdoor activities, explore the latest outdoor goods and gadgets, or be inspired by real adventurers like Sir Ranulph Fiennes. Visit for a day or camp from Friday to Monday.
For one weekend only, Willen’s beautiful lakeside location will be turned into a festival celebrating the great outdoors. You can see:
- Speakers like Sir Ranulph Fiennes and Felicity Aston
- Exhibitors selling anything from sunglasses to campervans
- Meerkats! Forget the cuddly toys, meet the real thing, and other exotic creatures
- Awesome two-wheeled stunts from Action Sports Tour and the M.A.D. mountain bike teams
- Taster sessions in kayaking, sailing, stand-up paddleboarding, canoeing, zorbing, climbing
- Water safety demos from cuddly canine rescuers
- Live music and outdoor film screenings for overnight campers
Show organiser Pauline Gibson says: “Being active is great for not just your body but also your mind. Many of our speakers draw on their past achievements to inspire young people and motivate corporates to achieve their potential.”
Headlining the seminars is the legendary Sir Ranulph Fiennes, ‘fresh’ back from his epic Marathon des Sables run, where he added another first to his achievements; the oldest Briton to complete this gruelling desert race. Find out just why he still keeps doing such challenges, what drives him, how did it all start.
Also appearing on the speaker platform is:
Felicity Aston, a polar explorer and scientist. On one of her polar expeditions many of her fellow skiers had never seen snow, never worn skis, never experienced sub-zero temperatures and never spent the night in a tent!
Mark Wood is an explorer who in February 2016 will attempt to trek from the Canadian coastline to the North Pole without a re-supply on a journey that he believes will be the final crossing of the Arctic ocean to the North Pole. A bold statement in an era of environmental change!
Ellie Bedford and her Newfoundland dogs will be out on Willen Lake giving advice and raising awareness on water safety, in a talk that should prove of great interest to parents and children alike.
Richard Harpham a human powered adventurer who has covered over 7,500 miles in canoes, kayaks, by bike and on foot. He believes you don’t have to travel far to have adventures and one of his themes is ‘adventures great and small’ where he talks about places to be explored on our native shores.
John Sullivan an ex-Marine commando teaches survival skills and is a charismatic and accomplished motivational speaker. He believes many people should find the courage to live their dreams or, as he calls it, ‘Feed the rat’, a term he uses to describe obsessions or passions. Discover what John’s own particular ‘rat’ is at the show!
Alex Jackson who first visited South Africa in 1998 will share his passion for Table Mountain and the beauty to be found in this country and further afield on his many and varied motorbike trips and public tours.
Displays and demos
Riding a bike might seem quite tame once you’ve seen what the guys from Action Sports Tour and the M.A.D. mountain bike team can do on 2 wheels! And if you’re feeling quietly confident, you can ‘have a go’ between shows.
And you’re never too young to start learning as Strider will demonstrate on their special test track. Bring your toddler along to try the Strider Balance Bike; they’ll be freewheeling before you know it!
The country has gone crazy for meerkats but just what do we know about these elegant creatures? Find out at the show when The Exotic Animal Encounter brings meerkats and other creatures for you to get up close and personal with.
A huge array of brands and products likely to appeal to outdoor enthusiasts will be showcased at the event, giving visitors an opportunity to try equipment and gadgets before they buy. Companies like TripBuddy, Ellis Brigham and Skoda will be exhibiting, along with travel companies so whether you’re looking to book an adventure break or buy anything from a new pair of shades to a fold-up boat, you’ll find it all there on display.
Entertainment and activities
You can be as active or inactive as you want at the show as there’s plenty to entertain, from snake pit challenges and climbing walls to demonstrations on the water.
For overnight campers there’s outdoor film screenings and acoustic sets of live music.
