How did you get started being a Hair Stylist?
I knew I wanted to be a stylist from around age 12. It’s such a cliché, but the only reason I kept my dolls was to play with their hair. As soon as I was able, I wrote to all the big guns in the industry (I wanted to get into the more creative side of hairdressing) such as L’Oreal, Wella, Redkin and Schwarzkopf. I was thrilled to get a placement at a Schwarzkopf salon, where I spent the next 3 years gaining my Level 2 Qualification, followed by my Level 3 Advanced Qualification.
I stayed with Schwarzkopf for nearly 10 years, where I gained all sorts of experience from teaching at Salon International, stage and presentation work, photographic hair work for photoshoots, catwalk shows, model hair and so much more.
What is your number one hair care tip?
My number one haircare tip would be to eat & drink well! I’m talking regular portions of veggies, fruits, nuts, diary (diet allowing), water etc. Healthy hair starts from within. There’s no quick/cheat ways to healthy, glossy and manageable hair.
What are the trendiest styles/colours at the moment?
Lobs are so on-trend. With celebrities and film stars like Anne Hathaway & Camila Mendes recently sporting their new shaggy lobs, I’ve definitely seen an increase for this hair cut! It’s so versatile – Straight & sleek, beachy waves, pretty curls or a messy grunge style.
Colour-wise, Blonde Balayage is still a huge favourite amongst my clients.
What would you say is your favourite go-to style?
You can’t go wrong with a low chignon, whether it’s for a job interview, birthday party, corporate event or your best friends wedding! Low chignons are a classic – It’s how you dress them up that really counts. You can add a string of pearls or ribbon weaved through, add a hair slide or comb, use feathers, gems, flowers…. anything goes!
Which hair/beauty products and tools are always in your kit?
I cannot live without my GHD Heat Protecting Spray! I use this product on EVERY client (and of course myself). If you want to give your hair a lovely smooth and glossy look, whilst protecting it from any heat damage, this product is my top recommendation.
For styling curls, my go-to product is actually an off the shelf Boots Essentials Curling Cream. It’s a steal at only £1.99, but gives you the best defined and frizz-free curls!
Everyone’s heard of Olaplex now, and most stylists will recommend it (especially for blonde colour treated hair) and I’m no different. It’s at the pricier end of the scale, but well worth investing in. Olaplex helps prevent damage to the internal structure of your hair and also helps repair any damage that may have already occurred. If I’m taking you blonde, we’re using Olaplex!
What do you love most about being a stylist?
Where do I start? I love the way my bride beams when seeing her hair complete on her wedding day. I love the way my teenage clients keep sneaking a glance in the mirror and smiling to themselves. I love the way my over 50’s are now taking Selfie’s to show off their “new do”. I love the way I can make my clients feel amazing about themselves and I love that I get to interact and play a small, but hopefully significant, part of their life events!
What’s been the most memorable moment of your career to date?
Representing Schwarzkopf Young Artistic Team at Salon International was a highlight and one of my biggest personal achievements. I had a live haircut and presentation to complete on stage.
Close to that, would be working with some fantastic photographers and models. It’s hard work, generally with long and unsociable hours – But I love it!
If you could style anyone, famous or not, who would it be?
I would LOVE to get my hands on Katy Perry’s hair! She seems like a great client to have as she is daring and loves to change up her looks regularly! She’s not afraid of a little colour or to even shave her head! … We could have a lot of fun together, I think!
What is the go-to makeup artist you recommend to your clients and why?
If you’re a bride looking for the perfect flawless radiance, Sarah Evans is your girl! Sarah is dedicated and reliable. She has an endless Portfolio of Bridal work and has a really lovely personality.
If you’re a model or beauty photographer looking for editorial standards, Natalie Wood will be your lady! Natalie has the most amazing talent! I’ve had the pleasure of working alongside her on various shoots and she always shows her professionalism.
