There’s a new name on the festive calendar this year, and it comes with 15 acres of historic grounds attached. Luton Hoo Estate, tucked between Harpenden and Luton, is throwing open its gates for Christmas at Luton Hoo Estate, inviting visitors to ‘unlock Christmas’ on selected dates from 4 December 2026 to 3 January 2027. The first artist impressions have just been revealed, and they suggest this is a big-hearted, big-scale production rather than a few fairy lights strung along a hedge.

A mile of light through the Walled Garden
The centrepiece is a one-mile illuminated Light Trail winding through the estate’s historic Walled Garden. After dark, the pathways come alive with botanical projections, light tunnels and atmospheric soundscapes, the kind of immersive trail that has become a winter ritual for families and couples alike.
Skating under the lights
The Walled Garden also hosts a new Skating Rink, ringed with festive lighting. Sessions last 45 minutes with skate hire included, so it slots neatly into an evening on the trail or works as a standalone outing with friends.

A mission with Father Christmas
For younger visitors, The Grotto is likely to be the main event. Some of Father Christmas’s most senior elves lead children on a special Christmas mission, opening with a 15-minute group performance before each family has a private visit with the man himself. Every child leaves with a gift, and the Grotto runs until Christmas Eve.
Something for everyone
Thoughtful touches make this more inclusive than many seasonal events. Starlight Sessions give SEND guests and their families a calmer visit to the Light Trail and Grotto, with capacity cut to 50%, quieter audio and the freedom to go at a slower pace. Dog owners can book Christmas Tails sessions on selected dates so four-legged family members can join in, and assistance dogs are welcome at every session.
For celebrations, office parties and group gatherings, VIP Packages for four, six or eight people include VIP parking, a welcome drink, a food voucher, a souvenir blanket and tote bag, access to a cosy guest area and extra time on the ice.

Food, drink and live entertainment
A dedicated food and drink area serves seasonal dishes and festive drinks, while a central stage hosts live entertainment and performances throughout the event up to Christmas Eve.

In their words
We are delighted to be opening the gates of Luton Hoo Estate for this brand-new Christmas experience. Christmas at Luton Hoo Estate will bring together the character and history of the grounds with light, entertainment and festive experiences.
Edward Phillips, Chief Executive, Luton Hoo Estate
We wanted to produce something that feels genuinely different and makes the most of this incredible setting. Whether guests are coming to meet Father Christmas, follow the Light Trail, go skating, enjoy the live entertainment or simply spend time together, they can create the Christmas visit that works for them.
Andy Mills-Brown, CEO, TAG Live (organisers)
The TrendLife verdict
With the Light Trail, ice rink and Grotto all on one site and parking included, Luton Hoo looks set to become one of the region’s go-to Christmas days out. Grotto slots and weekend evenings are likely to go first, so book early.
