Every house has its secrets. Freida McFadden’s bestselling psychological thriller The Housemaid is heading to the stage for the first time, and the world premiere production’s first tour dates include Milton Keynes Theatre from Tuesday 25 to Saturday 29 April 2028.

From page to screen to stage

McFadden’s 2022 novel became a viral sensation and spawned two sequels. Lionsgate’s film adaptation, released in December 2025 and directed by Paul Feig, grossed more than $400 million worldwide, with the sequel The Housemaid’s Secret due in cinemas on 17 December 2027. The stage version is based on both the novel and the Lionsgate film.

A creative team that knows how to thrill

The play is adapted by Bekah Brunstetter, a Tony Award nominee for the Broadway musical The Notebook whose screen credits include This Is Us and Maid. It is directed by Matthew Dunster, a Tony and Olivier nominee best known in the West End for the hit 2:22 A Ghost Story. It is produced by Simon Friend and Hanna Osmolska of Melting Pot, the company behind Life of Pi and Paranormal Activity, in association with Lionsgate.

In their words

We’re thrilled to work with Simon, Hanna, Bekah and Matthew to bring this story to the stage in an entirely new way, giving audiences the chance to experience its suspense, twists and turns live.

Jenefer Brown, President, Global Products & Experiences, Lionsgate

Bekah’s adaptation of The Housemaid is exactly what we’d hoped for – a fresh and uniquely theatrical take on this wildly popular story, and made with Matthew Dunster’s vision, it will certainly bring a thrilling new dimension to the franchise.

The TrendLife verdict

A huge book, a box-office hit and the director of 2:22 A Ghost Story make this one of the most intriguing theatre announcements for Milton Keynes. It’s the perfect pick for a book club night out, and it’s worth booking early.
