This November, the lawns of Waddesdon Manor are home to something quite different from the house’s usual grandeur. Standing with Giants has returned to the Buckinghamshire estate with For Your Tomorrow, its large-scale D-Day installation, on display until 29th November.
Arriving in the weeks around Remembrance Sunday, it’s one of the most moving things you can see in the county this autumn.
1,476 Silhouettes, One Moment of Reflection
For Your Tomorrow commemorates those who gave their lives during the D-Day landings. The installation is made up of 1,476 life-size silhouettes, set out across the grounds so that visitors walk among them.
It’s a display that works through scale and stillness rather than spectacle. Seen up close, the rows of figures make the human cost of a single day of the Second World War hard to ignore, and it invites you to slow down, stop and reflect. Entry to the installation is free with Grounds admission, so it’s easy to combine with a walk around Waddesdon’s gardens.
As Day Turns to Night: Twilight Openings
For a different perspective, Waddesdon is opening after hours on every Friday and Saturday from 6th to 28th November, between 3.45pm and 7pm. Visitors can watch the installation change as daylight fades, and each evening includes a special performance on the South Terrace to accompany the experience.
The silhouettes take on a very different character at dusk, and with limited evenings available, these sessions are likely to be popular.
