Bedford mum who learnt to DJ during lockdown launches Ladies Takeover
On the Friday 4th and Saturday 5th March, an all-female line-up of 13 DJ’s from the Lockdown Legacy are hosting a ‘Ladies Takeover’ live on Mixcloud. The event aims to raise awareness of women in music in the lead up to International Women’s Day and funds for IWD charity Womankind.
The Lockdown Legacy was founded on the 23rd May 2020 by a group of six friends who met every Friday during lockdown for a Zoom quiz. With clubs and bars closed, one of those friends, Rachael Hufton, suggested running an online DJ event – a kitchen disco – so that everyone could play music for one another.
That first event had six DJs, five who had not played in years, and one, Liz Miles, who taught herself to DJ in five days. Since then, the Lockdown Legacy has put on 17 three-day events, all hosted for free on Mixcloud, and the group has grown to 36 DJ’s, many of whom learnt to DJ during lockdown.

About the DJ’s
Everyone performing at the ‘Ladies Takeover’ learnt to DJ during lockdown, and have been playing for two years or less. Featuring a mix of house music including classic, vocal, disco, soulful and deep house, as well as DnB, Jungle and everything in-between, the event is free to watch live on mixcloud.com/live/thelockdownlegacy from 5pm-11pm on Friday 4th March and 3pm til late on Saturday 5thMarch.
Organiser Rachel Sutton, aka DJ Wingin’it, said: “I was inspired to run a two-day takeover on Mixcloud after being invited to play at Herd in Bedford on 6th March with 8 other women to celebrate IWD. Being part of the Lockdown Legacy has given me the confidence and support to find a new passion, however the women in the group are still in the minority, and that echoes across the music industry.
International Women’s Day gives us a platform to try and #breakthebias and not only highlight women in music, but hopefully inspire other women to do the same, either in music or in an area where there is inequality.”
Over the last 18 months, the Lockdown Legacy has supported various charities, raising over £30,000 for causes close to the DJ’s hearts including: Cancer Research, Alzheimer’s UK & The Stroke Association. The highlight of 2021 was taking over the Groove Garden tent at Standon Calling, with Brandon Block headlining.
The Lockdown Legacy will be back at Standon Calling 2022, and will be hosting a tent at the Dog and Whistle Festival. The Lockdown Legacy also has a regular show on Slice Audio, 10pm-12am every Friday night, DJ Lefty has a show on Bloop Radio and Dan the Drum has a regular show in TWR.
