anti-ageing foods

Blueberries, spinach and eggs are among nine everyday foods which can help reduce and delay the signs of ageing.

Health and wellbeing experts from Vivotion.com have compiled a list of the best anti-ageing foods that can help keep Britain looking, and feeling, younger for longer.

Pairing red wine with olives and nuts may seem like the start of a sophisticated evening, but the increase of vitamins and nutrients will also help your body feel younger.

One of the main signs of ageing is eyesight beginning to get poorer, something which eating plenty of eggs can help prevent.

“The anti-ageing foods on the list ensure the body has plenty of nutrients needed to keep internal systems going at the optimum rate before they slow down – which is when the signs of ageing creep in.

“Taking time to look at the health benefits of different foods can help you look more youthful for longer.”

These are Vivotion.com’s pick of nine anti-ageing foods:

1. Nuts

It doesn’t matter what type of nuts you turn too, they’re full of nutrients and are fantastic sources of protein, fibre and micronutrients. They also have great cholesterol-lowering and anti-inflammatory effects.

Nuts are also a great source of vitamin E which can help repair skin tissue, retain skin moisture and protect skin from UV rays.

2. Blueberries

These little berries have one of the highest levels of antioxidants in fruit. Full of anthocyanin, which is responsible for the deep blue colour and provides anti-ageing qualities.

They’re also full of vitamin C which helps to protect cells, encourages the absorption of iron and aids the digestive system.

3. Avocado

A fantastic source of inflammation-fighting fatty acids which helps to keep skin smooth and supple. The high content of Vitamin A can shed dead skin cells, leaving glowing skin behind.

The carotenoid in the fruit can also help block toxins and damage from the sun’s rays.

4. Olives

They can help protect your DNA and keep you looking and feeling younger due to the amount of polyphenols and phytonutrients in olives. You need to make sure you choose the stoned olives to reap the benefits, due to the pitting process stripping them of the vital nutrients.

5. Edamame

Foods rich in soya, such as Edamame, are great for healthy bones and the cardiovascular system. Women starting or nearing the menopause should turn to these foods, due to them helping boost oestrogen levels, which are significantly lowered through the process.

6. Turmeric

The spice helps fight cell damage, chronic disease and ageing due to it keeping skin and organs in good condition. Its pigment curcumin is a natural anti-inflammatory compound and can lower the risk of heart disease.

7. Spinach

A strong source of phytonutrients that help protect skin from sun damage. Also full of beta-carotene and lutein which are two nutrients that help improve skin elasticity meaning wrinkles can be avoided for longer.

8. Red Wine

Everything in moderation, it’s no secret that red wine can have anti-ageing benefits. The flavonoids you drink in the wine helps reduce bad cholesterol and in turn the risk of coronary heart disease whilst boosting good cholesterol. It also provides you with resveratrol which is thought to help maintain muscle.

9. Eggs

Eggs are a fantastic source of Choline which is used to build cell membranes and helps produce signalling molecules in the brain.

They are also full of Lutein and Zeaxanthin which are powerful antioxidants found in the retina of the eye.

Smile confidently with a *free* teeth whitening makeover

Welwyn Garden City’s Church Road Dental are giving our lucky readers the chance to win a dazzling free teeth whitening makeover worth over £400.

What is tooth whitening ?

Tooth whitening can be a very effective way of lightening the natural colour of your teeth without removing any of the tooth surface. It cannot make a complete colour change, but it may lighten the existing shade.

Deep Bleaching works by increasing the tooth’s permeability to oxygen which breaks down stain molecules. It is a combination treatment meaning that there is a 2 week home treatment followed by 1 hour visit at the dentist (optional).

Teeth are stained by the foods and drinks we consume. Smoking further stains teeth and the natural bright, white shade becomes darkened. Teeth whitening is a successful and simple method of lightening the colour of your teeth. The degree of whiteness achieved will vary from patient to patient and with the type of bleaching process chosen.

What are the benefits tooth whitening ?

One of the benefits of tooth whitened is an improvement in general self esteem, making us happier and more content.

Over time our teeth may become discoloured by certain foods that we eat, drinking coffee or red wine, smoking, and how well we brush and floss. Whitening can help by producing a younger looking effect. If we’re not embarrassed by or conscious of our teeth, we smile naturally and confidently. Smiling has been shown to improve mood by triggering the production of endorphins.

Dental professionals have noticed that patients who’ve had their teeth whitened tend to show an improvement in their oral health care routine. Experiencing the advantages of whiter teeth often leads us to take good care when brushing, flossing, and seeing our dentist for professional cleanings. Since good oral health can improve your overall health and prevent many diseases, this is by far the most important reason to consider teeth whitening.

How do I enter the competition ?

The Future of Beauty? The Beauty Hall from Next

Fashion retailer Next have announced they will be opening a new beauty store in the former Debenhams units in intu Watford and intu Milton Keynes.

Called ‘The Beauty Hall from Next’, the new concept store will open in units formerly occupied by Debenhams in both intu Watford and intu Milton Keynes. Next currently sells more than 200 beauty brands, including Estée Lauder, Clinique, Benefit, Elemis, Burberry, By Terry, Rituals, on its website, Next.co.uk, and additionally premium brands such as Bobbi Brown, YSL, Lancôme and Nars on sister site Fabled.com, which it bought from Ocado last year.

Many retailers are looking at ways to enter the lucrative beauty industry which is estimated to be £30 billion this year alone. The recent lockdown saw a rise in the demand for beauty products as beauticians and make-up artists downed tools.

Next already had plans to launch the new concept stores in five former Debenhams locations: the Bullring in Birmingham, The Oracle in Reading, Highcross in Leicester, Silverburn in Glasgow and Centrale in Croydon.
